Adopt a Street: Franconia Conference congregations participate in prayer evangelism

June 15, 2011 by Emily Ralph Servant

by Emily Ralph

Harleysville, PA — “Doing church is pretty difficult today,” admitted Charlie Ness, pastor of Perkiomenville Mennonite. This wasn’t new information for the other pastors gathered for the June 9 Pastors Breakfast.

“For 40 years I thought I had to build the church,” he said. Then he realized that Jesus promised in Matthew 16:18 that HE would build the church. And it was like a weight was lifted off his shoulders.

Ness, along with Scott Landes of Frederick Mennonite and Peter Smith of Hope Community Church, were sharing their vision for prayer evangelism. On its most basic level, prayer evangelism is talking to God about people before talking to people about God, Smith said.

All three pastors are involved with UPPEN: the Upper Perk Prayer Evangelism Network, a network of churches in the Perkiomen Valley (eastern PA) that works together to bring about transformation in their region. Their most recent project is Adopt a Street, a movement that covers 100% of the streets in their region with prayer.

“Adopt a Street is about changing the spiritual climate in your community,” said Smith. Then he asked, “What would happen is all the streets in your community were being prayed for daily for the next twelve months?” To illustrate his point, he showed a video of the Adopt a Street movement in Newark, NJ. In the first month of Newark’s program, the crime rate dropped by 33%.

Landes has experienced this transformation firsthand as he and his family pray for their street every day. According to Luke 10, there are four steps to prayer evangelism in your neighborhood, he said: first, praying blessings over your neighbors; second, engaging in fellowship with them to create connection; third, ministering God’s love to your neighbors by caring for them; and finally, proclaiming the kingdom by sharing God’s Word.

“Adopt a Street is not a program, but a lifestyle,” Landes shared. It’s about “being available to God for divine appointments each day.”

Youth and leaders dream for the future

Youth Pastor, Rockhill Mennonite Church

Dreaming about direction for Youth Ministry in the Franconia Mennonite and Eastern District Conferences was the topic of conversation for the gathering of pastors, youth leaders, Conference Related Ministry directors, and youth on Monday June 6th, 2011. Visioning and conversations were held around round tables with multiple opportunities to share table conversations with the entire group.

Jenifer Erickson Morales began the evening by facilitating conversation about the roles of children and youth in Scripture. It was evident that children and youth held significant roles in the story of God’s people. Marlene Frankenfield and Scott Benner shared historical perspectives of youth ministry in Franconia and Eastern District Conferences which revealed certain trends and patterns reflecting the values of fellowship, faith, and service. Intentional mentorship and discipleship of youth has been a significant piece in the stories of both Conferences.

Common themes of the evening were desires for relationship building and resource sharing among Conference churches, youth calling for deeper spiritual conversations, and desire to include the contributions of youth into the regular ministries of the church. Geography, culture, finances, time, and priorities were all acknowledged as significant barriers to achieving these goals. Finding the balance between fellowship/programming, discipleship/faith formation, and levels of support to congregations will be a task for the Conferences as direction for youth ministry is defined.

[podcast]http://www.mosaicmennonites.org/media-uploads/mp3/Immigration%20Pastors%20Breakfast[/podcast]

A Place to Call Home: Our New Immigrant Neighbors was the topic of the Pastors’ and Leaders’ Breakfast held on Wednesday, September 29, 8:00 – 10:00 a.m. at the Mennonite Conference Center in Harleysville.

Peter Pedemonti (New Sanctuary Movement, Philadelphia), Maria Byler (pastoral care staff member of Philadelphia Praise Center), and Bob Walden (Peace & Justice Committee and West Swamp Mennonite Church) led the conversation. Who are the new immigrants in our congregations and communities, and why did they come here? Starting from a biblical framework, the discussion addressed the difficult questions about our undocumented immigrants and provided an overview of immigration issues through personal stories of local immigrants. Also, there was be a brief review of resources for sermons and group study.

Conference gathers for holy extravaganza

December 3, 2009 by Conference Office

Franconia Conference Moderator Blaine Detwiler of Susquehanna, Pa, suggested that the annual Conference Assembly might be a “holy extravaganza.” And indeed it was, held at Souderton (Pa) Mennonite Church on November 13 and 14 around the theme of “Cultivating Healthy and Growing Leaders.” The extravaganza kicked off with a multiethnic worship team from across Conference congregations and singing that moved seamlessly amongst the Conference’s four worshiping languages—English, Indonesian, Spanish and Vietnamese, the assembly pulled together persons from global partners, denominational ministries, congregations and conference-related ministries for stories, worship, business, fellowship and workshops.

While business was limited at this year’s gathering, those gathered heard stories on how the Conference’s Vision and Financial Plan is incarnated. Those stories were designed to give insight into how the outcomes of healthy and growing disciples, leaders, congregations and connections are moving toward fulfillment of congregational vision. Conference Executive Minister Noel Santiago suggested that this year’s assembly offered insight into how God was moving “the tent stakes” of the Conference. Specifically, this was noted with the acceptance of the largely Indonesian speaking Atlanta Revival Center as a member congregation. This is the Conference’s first member congregation south of the Mason-Dixon line and likely the largest Mennonite Church USA congregation in Georgia.

Sara Lapp Kolb of Telford, Pa., a delegate from Plains Mennonite Church, suggested that there was something significant happening in how the gathering marked a new “being together.” Special guests at this year’s assembly featured gifted worship leader and musician James W. Crumbly, Jr. an instructor at the Patel Conservatory in Tampa, FL and Heidi Rolland Unruh of Hutchinson, KS, policy analyst and staff associate at Evangelicals for Social Action. Unruh spoke on the issues of cultivating healthy and growing leaders and congregations, focusing on a conversation in Ephesians 3. Rolland Unruh challenged the conference toward “multiplying, including, reconciling, participation in seeing God’s will be done in earth as it is in heaven.”

Newly credentialed pastors were recognized—including Connie Detwiler, associate pastor at Lakeview Mennonite Church (Susquehanna, Pa); Donna Merow, pastor at Ambler (Pa) Mennonite Church, Joe Hackman, youth pastor at Salford Mennonite Church (Harleysville, Pa) and Scott Franciscus, associate pastor at Covenant Community Fellowship in Lansdale, Pa. Special prayer was offered for Conrad Swartzentruber of Sellersville, Pa, who has been named principal at Christopher Dock Mennonite High School in Lansdale, Pa. Jim King from Telford, Pa, a member of Plains Mennonite Church was unanimously affirmed to serve a three-year term on the Conference Board. The Conference also marked several ordinations and a transfer of pastoral credentials, along with the deaths of four retired pastors—J. Lester Eshleman, Henry Kulp, Harold Miller, and Paul Yoder.

International guests from Haiti, Mexico and the United Kingdom were present, along with representatives from Mennonite Church USA agencies and institutions. Over 100 delegates participated in the weekend events, including representatives from most conference congregations and the majority of the Conference’s 23 related ministries. Ongoing worship and prayer were offered and prayer stations set up by the host congregation at Souderton provided points of reflection for the two-day event.
