Iglesia Menonita Encuentro de Renovación

Caring for Others: The call of José Andrés Mendoza (Encuentro de Renovación, Miami, FL)

March 7, 2024 by Cindy Angela

Transcribed and translated by Andrés Castillo

José Andrés Mendoza and his family.

I came from Honduras to the U.S. with the dream of returning to my country to start a business after two years, but my stay was prolonged.

I was introduced to the Mennonite church through my wife, Mirtza, who was a part of Encuentro de Renovación congregation in Miami, Florida. At that time, the church had existed for about five years.

I started studying through Instituto Bíblico Anabautista (Anabaptist Biblical Institute) because I wanted to know more about God. A brother from the church named Nicho motivated me to grow in my spiritual life.

After a year of attending Encuentro, I married Mirtza. Soon after, I was invited to be a leader in the church. I didn’t know what gifts the church leaders saw in me.

Suddenly, theological differences arose in the church. The pastor at the time preached the prosperity gospel, which some of us didn’t agree with. This caused the church to split. The pastor left, took most of the people with him, and we were left with five or six members.

Seeing the need, God pushed me into pastorship. If God had given me the option, I would not have chosen to be a pastor, but for one reason or another, nobody else was able to take on the responsibility. I had a desire to care for others—I did home visitation with my wife—but I had never thought about doing it with the title of “pastor.”

Encuentro restarted with the members that remained. Some leaders from the Southeast Mennonite Conference and Homestead Mennonite Church helped us with ideas for how to continue as a church. We continued evangelizing and inviting people, and the church started to be filled again.

Although I have been actively pastoring, sometimes I have doubts if God has called me to ministry. I wonder, “Why didn’t God call someone more prepared?”

In my initial role as an interim pastor, I suffered from a partial facial paralysis. The doctor asked me, “Do you worry? Are you stressed? Something caused this.” I realized that I was trying to solve other people’s problems, ones that were out of my control.

In 2020, the pandemic came, bringing another new beginning to the church. A couple of years later, we received another blow: a new Florida law that forced many of our congregants to flee the state.

Today we have a congregation of about 20 members. Some are long-time members, and some are new. Past events have helped us understand that the church belongs to God, not to us. When we realize this, we can rest and know that there is hope, that someday, God will multiply our church.

At Encuentro de Renovación we believe in mutual transformation carried out through companionship and communion. It is a multicultural church that faces difficulties, but we share in meals and other activities. We also provide an opportunity to give feedback after the sermons, which are not given only by me.

My wife Mirtza and I have three daughters: Jocelyn (29), Johanna (27) and Marlyn (26). We like to read, watch movies and go for walks in the park.

Here I am, Lord

February 17, 2022 by Conference Office

Josué González, of Mosaic Conference, Elected as Moderator-Elect for Hispanic Mennonite Church

In a national assembly on January 29, 2022, Iglesia Menonita Hispana (IMH – Hispanic Mennonite Church) elected Josué González of Miami, FL, as moderator-elect.

Gonzalez is a founding member and elder of Iglesia Menonita Encuentro de Renovación (Encounter for Renewal Mennonite Church) in Miami, FL which is part of Mosaic Conference. He is a cargo flight dispatcher and is married to Noemi. González is also a student of the Instituto Bíblico Anabautista, (IBA – Hispanic Anabaptist Bible Institute) which is operated by Mennonite Education Agency (MEA). He is completing his final trimester and is set to graduate this Spring.

Iglesia Menonita Hispana is a Racial/Ethnic constituency group of Mennonite Church USA (MC USA) and reaches multicultural Hispanic and Latino/a Mennonites across the country.

González’ four-year term begins immediately. He will serve two years as moderator-elect and two years as moderator. He will also serve on the Constituency Leaders Council (CLC) of MC USA.

Marco Güete, Leadership Minister for Mosaic Conference and the director of MEA’s Hispanic Ministries Education programs, affirmed González’ readiness for this role.

“Josué has shown maturity, Christian spirituality, and intelligence serving on the local church board, and he will do well nationally with Iglesia Menonita Hispana,” Güete said.

María Teresa Pérez-Soto agrees. She is a leader of Encuentro de Renovación church and a tutor for IBA. “It is a blessing that Brother Josué González has been appointed moderator-elect of the Hispanic Mennonite Church board,” she said. “His dedication and commitment to the Lord’s work has been manifested in his Bible study with IBA and the help he has given to the local church as Treasurer. Through his passion for public speaking, Brother Josué will be a great asset for the board of IMH; additionally, he will ensure he moderates all meetings and assemblies fairly.”

González shared his thoughts about being called to a ministry position in the Hispanic Mennonite church. “When I started my studies at the Anabaptist Bible Institute, (IBA), my life changed and I started to think that God is training me not only to know more about him, but to serve him as a true disciple,” he said.

“I understood that I should work with the Mennonite Church and be able to help in the ministry where the Lord will use me. I just said, ‘Here I am Lord. I am willing to work for you.’ And this was how the Lord opened the doors to work with the intercultural committee of Mosaic [Mennonite Conference], and now with the Hispanic Mennonite Church USA,” reflected Gonzalez.

Ulises Arenas, the Executive Director of Iglesia Menonita Hispana, welcomed Josué, saying, “We appreciate Josué González becoming IMH’s new moderator-elect and we are blessed for his willingness to serve on the new IMH executive board. It is a pleasure for us to welcome Josue and work with him.”

Congregational Profile: Iglesia Menonita Encuentro de Renovación

October 8, 2020 by Conference Office

by Javier Márquez

Editor’s Note: Mosaic Mennonite Conference anticipates welcoming eight Florida congregations (that were formerly part of Southeast Mennonite Conference) at this fall’s conference assembly.  This is a profile of one of these congregations.

What is the call that God has placed on Iglesia Menonita Encuentro de Renovación (Encounter for Renewal Mennonite Church) in Miami, Florida?

For Pastor José Andrés Mendoza, this question has three clear answers:

  1. Taking care of the faith community
  2. Helping immigrants
  3. Providing hope and trust in God.

The church community began in 1998 in Miami, Florida by Brother Gamaliel Fallas. Brother Marco Güete, now a Leadership Minister in Mosaic Conference, contributed to the formation of the church by sharing his inspiration of having a Mennonite community in Miami.

Iglesia Menonita Encuentro de Renovación is an intercultural Hispanic community, with members coming from many different countries, such as Colombia, Honduras, Argentina, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and the US.

The church is deeply and intensely committed to the social reality that surrounds them, expressing to others the love of God and their evangelical call to serve others.  Members regularly visit prisons and hospitals to visit those imprisoned and sick. While there, they pray and share food and company with families, patients, and inmates.

The church, which meets every Sunday morning for worship, extends its service and contacts throughout the community directly by providing lodging and counseling to immigrants. The church has been organized in such a way that they can provide newly arrived immigrants with food and lodging for a period of two months.

The church also supplies food, school supplies, and grooming tools for immigrant children who are part of a support group called Casa Hogar. Providing hope in this context for immigrants who arrive, leaving behind their families and belongings for the promise of a better future, is an important task of the church.

In addition to the constant help and closeness between the brothers and sisters of the church, they also care for the broader community of faith. Bible studies in members’ homes or community lunches, where the cost of lunch is often assumed by one or two church members, demonstrates an expression of love towards each other and the church.

The modest church building could give the mistaken impression of being a community with limited reach. The truth is that this body of believers has a passion and dedication for the call of the Lord Jesus Christ which leads them to continually carry out activities of service, love, and peace throughout the city of Miami.
